Two Wheels Motorcycle Training

Welcome to Two Wheels Motorcycle Training, the leading provider of motorcycle training for Edinburgh and the Lothians.

Since 1991, we at Two Wheels have taken great pride in offering the best training available, giving over 7,000 new riders a first start on the road. With experienced, highly qualified instructors, a fleet of modern hire bikes to train on, and the latest in communication equipment we are in pole position to get you on the road.

If you've never rode a bike, our large on-site training area is perfect for quickly familiarising and gaining confidence in the feel and controls of a motorcycle. The area is adjacent to the Training School and not accessed by other vehicles.

Trial Session

We offer a one hour trial session with an instructor in a safe off road environment, which will allow you to decide whether or not motorcycling is for you. We run these sessions on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday most weeks. There is a nominal £10 charge, which we will refund when a CBT or full licence course is booked. Please note that you MUST have a valid motorcycle provisional licence to undertake a CBT.

Compulsory Basic Training (CBT)

All learner motorcyclists must complete a course of Compulsory Basic Training before riding on the road. The CBT has a structured syllabus, starting off with a talk about motorcycling, equipment and basic safety, before introducing you to the bike you will use for the course. Having been shown over the bike and how to operate the controls, you will carry out supervised gain experience riding the bike in a safe off road environment. When the instructor is happy with the standard achieved, he will then give another talk about riding safely on the road, before taking you out on to public roads for a minimum of two hours, and until you have displayed safe and competent riding in a variety of traffic situations. Off road training will be conducted at a maximum ratio of four pupils per instructor, on road training at a maximum of 2:1 For the CBT, we provide the motorcycle, helmet, jacket and gloves, and insurance. You must attend on time (9am), with both parts of your provisional licence. The course will run till approximately 6pm, but it is not always possible to complete within this timescale. If the CBT is not completed within the day, further training, bike and equipment hire will be provided at no additional charge.

Full Licence Courses

As of January 2013, there are three levels of motorcycle licence:

  1. Category A (Direct Access) allows you access to any size of bike, but is only open to those aged 24+, or with two years' experience on a full A2 licence
  2. Category A2 allows you to ride bikes of up to 35kw (46.6bhp), and is open to all those aged 19 or above
  3. Category A1 (Light Motorcycle) allow you only up to 125cc bikes with a maximum power output of 14.6bhp

Prior to attending for a full licence course, you must have completed a CBT and a Theory Test (book online at www.gov.uk/book-a-driving-theory-test or on 0300 200 1122). We run courses for Category A (Direct Access) every week, and A2 as required. Both courses normally run as a four day block from Monday to Thursday, with module one of the test normally on the Thursday morning, and module two usually on Thursday or Friday of the following week. Sometimes low test availability will lead to a longer gap between modules. By arrangement, we can also offer more flexible extended courses, over a longer, less intense period.

Module one is conducted off road, and is a test of your ability to handle the bike. Module two is an on road driving test conducted by a Driving Standard Agency examiner accompanying you on another motorcycle.

We will provide the motorcycle, helmet, jacket, gloves and insurance for all your training and testing, and within the course fee, we will pay for one Module one, and one Module two bike test. If you fail, you will be liable for repeat test fees (currently £15.50 for Module one, and £75 for Module two).

Training for Category A1 (Light Motorcycle) tests is carried out by arrangement.
